A four-alarm apartment fire in the 3600 block of South 180 Street on Friday has displaced as many as 50 people, the Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority reported.
No residents were injured in the fire. One firefighter was sent to a local hospital for an undisclosed medical condition. Red Cross is helping the displaced residents and has set up a shelter for them at the SeaTac Community Center.
The fire was first reported at 4 p.m. as smoke came from an apartment. Within a few minutes the reports changed as 911 callers saw smoke and flames beginning to come from the two-story apartment building’s windows and roof.
When the first Puget Sound Fire chief officer arrived on scene, he immediately added additional fire units to the incident by raising the call to a second, third, and eventually, a fourth alarm. By the fourth alarm, there were more than 20 fire apparatus and 60 firefighters at the scene.
The stubborn fire took several hours to fully contain and damaged over half of the apartments in the building.
A fire crew watched over the building throughout the night. The fire investigator is determining the cause.
Firefighters from throughout South King County responded, including: Port of Seattle, South King Fire, Tukwila, Burien, and Renton. King County Medic One and the SeaTac Police Department also assisted at the incident. Zone 3 Fire Explorers provided rehabilitation for the firefighters.
