20-year-old woman fatally stabbed at Kent apartment complex

Police arrest 24-year-old man after standoff

Kent Police arrested a 24-year-old Kent man for reportedly stabbing to death a 20-year-old woman at an apartment complex in the 24600 block of 64th Avenue South.

Officers responded at about 7 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 24 to a report of a woman being stabbed, according to police. Witnesses told officers that a male suspect had fled into a nearby apartment.

Police found an unresponsive woman in a hallway with a stab wound. Another female was with the woman. Officers moved them to a safer location where police and medics attempted life-saving measures on the woman, who died at the scene.

The man remained in the apartment and refused to come out. Initial information indicated that the man might be armed with a firearm, so Valley SWAT and negotiators responded.

Negotiators established communications with the barricaded suspect, but he refused to exit the apartment. Hours of negotiations to get the man to surrender were not successful, according to police. SWAT deployed gas into the apartment and the suspect, a 24-year-old Kent resident, immediately exited and was taken into custody without further incident.

Police did not release the connection between the arrested man and the woman.

This is the second homicide in Kent this year. A man was found fatally shot inside his still running vehicle on Jan. 7 in the 23200 block of 88th Avenue South near an apartment complex. Officers located a vehicle parked off the roadway in some landscaping with the engine still running. The man had fatal gunshot wounds. The case remains unsolved.
