A sure sign that spring is here is the activity at the Riverbend Eagle nest high above a tree behind the Riverbend Golf Course in Kent.
After an unsuccessful hatch last year, the eagles got busy and started building a new nest last fall and continued to work through the winter. The new nest is in the same clump of trees just across the Green River but in a more protected location, according to Julene Bailie, local author and founder of the Fellow Eagle Watchers group.
“We don’t know the exact cause of the failed hatch but speculate the extremely cold and rainy weather last spring, plus the condition of the nest, may have affected the eggs,” Bailie said. “This spring, the eagles have mated, laid egg(s) and are starting the incubation process. The myriads of photographers (Fellow Eagle Watchers) and those that watch these beautiful birds will watch and wait and hope they have a successful hatch this year.”
Bailie’s books focus on teaching children life skills. Her recently completed third book, “The Eagle Who Was Afraid to Fly,” helps children overcome their fears, and she is working on a fourth book, “The Garbage in the Nest.”
You can follow Bailie and the activities of the Riverbend Eagles on Facebook, Flickr or catch narrated videos on YouTube. Or stop by and see the Riverbend Eagles and the Fellow Eagle Watchers in person.
The nest tree is just off the Green River Trail, behind the Riverbend Golf Course, at the corner of Russell and James streets.
