The Museum of Flight celebrates 50 years of the Estes Astron Alpha model rocket with a special display by the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), plus a meet-and-greet with Bill Simon, designer of the original Alpha on Saturday, Sept. 23.
The museum, 9404 E. Marginal Way S., Tukwila, will show the movie, “October Skies” – the inspiring story of rocketeer-turned NASA engineer Homer Hickam. NAR will exhibit models showcasing the evolution and descendants of the Alpha, including the world’s largest at 12-feet tall.
Visitors can also see the museum’s extensive model rocket collection, and the Gee Bee racing plane flown in the movie, “The Rocketeer.” The exhibits will be on view from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the screening of “October Skies” at 3 p.m. All programs are included with museum admission.
Boeing Employees Model Rocket Club members will be on hand to invite visitors to their special Alpha Anniversary launch on Sunday, Sept. 24, at the club’s Kent launch site.
