For the Reporter

The Kentlake High School Drama Department presents “Young Frankenstein,” Mel Brooks’ musical comedy based on his 1974 movie of the same name.

“Young Frankenstein” runs Nov. 13-16 and Nov. 20-23 at 7 p.m. at the Kentlake High School Performing Arts Center, 21401 SE Falcon Way, Kent.

Kentlake director Pam Cressey chose this hysterical musical because she loves Brooks’ humor and has enjoyed the “Young Frankenstein” movie since her high school days when it first appeared in theaters.

“This musical gives our students another opportunity to utilize their tapping and comedy skills honed for last year’s ‘Spamalot’ and ‘Singing in the Rain,'” Cressey said.

The play closely follows the madcap plot of the movie. Kentlake junior Parker Kinder plays the part of Frederick (“I’m a Fronkensteen”) Frankenstein, the grandson of mad scientist Dr. Victor von Frankenstein.

After the death of his grandfather, Frederick is forced to leave his frigid fiancé Elizabeth (played by sophomore Madeline Payment and junior Morgan Thompson) and travel to Transylvania to settle the estate, where he discovers a yodeling lab assistant (senior Mackenzie Visser and junior Olivia Powers) and an intriguing experiment to re-animate the dead.

The project takes a hilarious turn when the hunchback Igor (senior Devin Bovee) mistakenly brings Frederick the brain of “Abby Normal” to insert into his creature, played by senior Shawn Moynihan.

In addition to nonstop singing and dancing, the play offers several technical challenges, including the transformation of Moynihan into a 7-foot-tall monster with a tux.

The humor is intended for mature audiences. Although the lyrics have been adapted for its high school cast, the material is not suitable for those 13 and younger.

All tickets are $10 and may be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com or at the door one hour before show time. For more information, please go to kentlakedrama.com.
