When Julie Shott discovered that men enrolled in Kent’s John Volken Academy for addiction recovery were selling raffle tickets to buy hygiene items, she knew that there was a better way.
Kent has several service clubs that raise funds to provide scholarships and many other items to those in need, and Shott knew that a challenge was in order.
Thus began the Hygiene Drive Challenge among the Kent Rotary Club, the Kent Sunrise Rotary Club, the Kent Lions Club, the Kent-Meridian Kiwanis Club and the Kent Kiwanis Club, with the club collecting the most hygiene items and good used clothing getting bragging rights.
Each club put out a box at meetings in late June and early July, each filling up with items. On July 20, each club brought their collections to John Volken Academy on Central Avenue North. Although the Noon Rotary Club had the most items, when it was based on membership, it became pretty much a draw.
The winner? Men enrolled at the academy fighting addiction and getting back into society, clean and sober.
