Kent Juneteenth Celebration set for Saturday, June 22 on East Hill

Event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Morrill Meadows Park

The 13th annual Juneteenth Celebration presented by the Kent Black Action Commission is set for Saturday, June 22.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Morrill Meadows Park, 10600 SE 248th St., on the East Hill next to Kent YMCA.

Highlights include a processional, featuring the Buffalo Soldiers of Seattle; a Juneteenth proclamation by Kent Mayor Dana Ralph; music from Seattle guitarist Michael Powers and other artists; free food between noon and 2 p.m; speakers; African drummers and much more, according to Gwen Allen-Carston, executive director of the Kent Black Action Commission.

Juneteenth is short for June 19th, which marks the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure that all enslaved people be freed, two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States.
