Kent Friends of the Library offers opportunities to learn, grow

Recently, the Kent Reporter awarded the Kent Public Library with the Best Bookstore Award and a small plaque for display.

People may wonder why and where a public library would sell books and such.

Well, as it turns out, quite a few people donate books, CD’s, etc. to the library, and Kent Friends of the Library members have set up a shelf in the library and sell these donations at a very modest price. The profits go into the Friends’ account.

With the proceeds, Kent Friends of the Library are able to sponsor programs at the library. These programs cater to children, teens and adults. A few examples for this year:

• Brian Waite, Jummin’ on Jupiter Show on July 9, Deep Rooted Music, LLC

• Dr. Seuss Celebration Concert on Feb. 25

• Agnieszka Paint the Universe Workshop on June 10

• Seattle Theater Group, Kent Dance Workshop on June 17

Who are these Kent Library Friends? We are Kent residents who love our library. We want to do things to help the community through our library. There is no membership fee, and volunteer time is entirely up to individuals. We meet every two months and have developed great camaraderie. We warmly welcome new members.

If you are looking to become a volunteer to help the Kent community, Kent Friends of the Library is a good choice. To learn more about the organization and to become a Kent Library friend, please contact Jose Garcia (jjgarcia@kcls.org), library manager.

As you can see your book and media donations to the Kent Public Library are much appreciated, and with Library friends’ efforts, enjoyable programs have been funded and offered. No wonder Kent Reporter gave them the “Best Bookstore Award.”

– Tina C. Fu, member of Kent Friends of the Library
