For the Reporter
Student theater performances will be popping up throughout the Kent area this spring. Most are at large high schools or theater companies with permanent stages and large budgets.
Yet, with dedication and cooperation, a theater experience can be produced with a limited budget and small cast, delivering a quality performance.
Kent residents and co-directors Heather Young and Terri MacDonald have been teaching a theater class at Garden Christian Homeschool Co-op for the past four years. They have steadily developed a top-notch program, culminating in an end-of-the-year production, “A Little Princess”.
Performances are 1 and 6 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at Faith Church, 25636 140th Ave. SE, Kent.
Tickets are available at the door. A suggested donation is $3 per person.
The cast includes students between the ages of 10 and 18. Students actors are also composing and performing the music for the production.
Don’t let the word “Princess” deter you – this is a play that will be enjoyed by the entire family, boys and girls alike. With comedy, tragedy, mystery and intriguing characters like a lascar from India and his mischievous pet monkey, there is something for everyone.
“A Little Princess” opens with 7-year-old Sara and her father, Captain Crewe, arriving at a boarding school in London. Sara’s father has to set out to sea for India, but not before purchasing a new wardrobe and a doll for her. It isn’t long before Sara is a popular student in the school and they start to regard her as a princess. But circumstances soon change.
Garden Christian is a Christian homeschool co-operative, offering once-a-week classes, electives and fellowship opportunities in South King County. It began in 2004 and serves more than 60 families and 150 children in a variety of classes at Highline Christian Church in Burien.
