Brenda Miller, a senior pianist from Kentridge High School who recently took first place in the Washington State Solo and Ensemble Contest, will perform a senior recital at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 4 at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church, 13055 S.E. 192nd St., in Renton.
Miller will perform the recital as a culmination of all her piano accomplishments and as a graduation/farewell to everyone she has worked with. The recital is free and open to the public.
The featured music will include works by works by Bach, Schubert, Ravel, and Rachmaninoff’s Elegiac Trio in D minor, which will also feature Kaelynn Dirks on violin and Justin Kim on cello. In addition, St. Stephen’s Youth Choir, a group Miller has accompanied for several years, will sing a set of songs.
Miller won the Solo and Ensemble Contest April 29-30 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. The contest was sponsored by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and the Washington Music Educators Association.
To advance to the state competition, Miller won one of 22 regional contests, including playing Ravel’s Albarado del Gracioso, considered by many one of the most difficult pieces in the piano literature.
Miller plans to attend the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma and study music and biology.
Note: Candy Chang, of Kentridge, placed second in Solos for flute-piccolo at the Washington State Solo and Ensemble Contest in April at Ellensburg.
