John Carlson in discussing talks with Iran refers to what he calls "the false comfort of appeasement."
He says talking with enemies is "discredited by history."
Free enterprise — the business gives the citizens a good reasonable price — they get no help from the government.
The rich lobbyists are not legal — they make laws against the people for their own good. They do not care what it costs us as long as they get rich off our labor. They would not get rich if they had to build the home.
Rather than showing contempt for and criticizing American Olympiads as you did in your column “Americans don’t need to win it all” (Kent Reporter, Laura Pierce, Aug. 23). I prefer to respect them for the hard work and sacrifices they made to compete to be honored with being named the best in their sport.

Should the City of Kent have an arena football team at the Kent Events Center? At this time, it has been exciting for the City of Kent.
I made a pinky promise to a friend in which I promised to write to this newspaper, and I am finally fulfilling it. It all began a year ago with summer homework assigned in my art class. I was having trouble trouble starting. I had no idea what to paint. It was a creative block.
Arrogance, illusions of grandeur, financial irresponsibly, lack of common sense. These are the words that come to mind when I read about global warming, climate change, climate cycles, and other buzz words that describe what is going on with our planet and how we are must go about fixing it.
I was disappointed with the article by Daniel Mooney entitled “Helping Ideas Take Flight.” (July 2 Kent Reporter.)
Whether you consider yourself old-fashioned, new age or post-modern, the democratic process remains the same—the people elect the president. The question is, how good a leader will we have if the people are not well-informed? We each need to inform ourselves by looking at what the candidates have done, rather than what they say because their action is the best predictor of how they will act in the future.
Two years ago, McCain demanded that we talk with Hamas. Today, he insists that we, the U.S., not talk with Hamas.
He used to say, “No Torture!” Now he insists, “Torture!”
He informs us that war in Iraq [may] continue for 100 years, or more. Now he promises that the troops will return home in five years.
I would like to suggest three ways for people to use all or part of their Economic Stimulus Tax Rebate.
Thank you to Kris Hill for reporting on the alarming King County budget shortfall. (June 6 Kent Reporter, page 3, “Cuts to county budget will be ‘deep, searing.’”)
In addition to the cuts in the criminal justice system that were noted (about 80 percent of the general fund budget) there is a proposal that ALL health and human-service funding (the other 20 percent of the budget) be eliminated in three years.
Yes, that is ALL this funding!
Climate change impacts everything having to do with sustaining life on Earth. Regions will warm. Sea levels will rise. Species will migrate. Frequency and severity of major weather events - such as hurricanes, droughts, deluges, and heat waves - will increase and be more unpredictable. These are already occurring. This affects our health, agriculture, forests, water, coasts and natural areas.
A thought came to mind today about the race between Hillary and Obama...(keeping in mind that I am an unwavering conservative Republican and will vote McCain, although Mitt was my candidate)...but, if a Democrat were to win I would rather have Hillary than Obama (I will literally be sick the night of elections if he becomes the president of the United States...a country where we salute our flag because of what it stands for and HE Doesn’t!...Oh, he will now because he knows that “we” are watching.)
I recently read “Student’s passion for recycling merits praise” in the April 9 Kent Reporter.
Thanks to The Kent Reporter and writer Daniel Mooney for the excellent front page article Wednesday, April 2 on former Kent resident Gary Garner.
I recently read your article in the Kent Reporter dated April 19, 2008, entitled “Community papers all about local news.” Although my response is late, I completely concur with what you wrote. The major TV stations and newspapers seem to like using Kent as a dumping ground for everything that is wrong in our region. I also have noticed that they have no idea just how large the area we call “Kent” really is. I have friends who talk about the Des Moines area as if were downtown Kent.
As I sat reading your Local Speak article of May 14 written by Mr. Todd Nuttman (“Pledge of Allegiance or blind obedience,” pg. 8) I had a glimmer of his underlying mindset: do away with inconvenient or not-understood national traditions, even though they be tried and true.
This is in response to the article by Todd Nuttman entitled “Pledge of Allegiance or blind obedience?”
To say I found Todd Nuttman’s article offensive is an understatement.
