’18 election: An apology is in order

As a veteran from the 8th Congressional District, I call upon Dr. Kim Schrier, candidate for the 8th Congressional District, to apologize for her comments comparing her race against Dino Rossi to fighting against the Nazi regime in World War II.

Roughly 10 percent of the voting population inside the 8th Congressional District is made up of active duty or retired veterans. The veteran community takes stolen valor very seriously. As a retired Army veteran who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom overseas, I have noticed a trend for some political candidates wanting a free ride by somehow falsely claiming association with those in uniform who served and sacrificed.

Schrier is one of the latest entries into the Hall of Shame. It is very distasteful and dishonorable behavior to compare her voluntary political campaign to combat service in WWII against an evil enemy. Even the Donut Dollies of WWII and subsequent conflicts served more reputably.

Dino Rossi is a decent and honorable man who is far better prepared to responsibly represent the folks in the 8th Congressional District. He is the face of how future competent government will be.

Add my name to the growing list of veterans calling out Schrier, or any other politician who is shamefully coasting on the coat-tails of real veterans. Please don’t insult us.

I call on all voters to join me in disavowing the stolen valor statements from this out-of-touch candidate.

– Martin Metz, Lt. Col., U.S., Army (retired)
