A Kent veterinarian has gone solar.
Dr. Rob McMonigle recently had solar panels installed on the roof of his practice, McMonigle Veterinary Hospital, to help generate renewable power and reduce energy costs.
McMonigle hopes the change will bring good results. The State of Washington, in an effort to promote renewable electricity, is purchasing solar generation. Business owners who go solar are eligible for a tax credit as incentive for investing in alternative power.
McMonigle hopes to cut energy costs by 25 percent over time.
“We are proud to be a leader in the green sustainable movement and to be one of the first veterinary practices in the Puget Sound to install solar,” McMonigle said. “This will be a simple solution to help save money on our electric bills while utilizing clean, renewable energy.
“Even on an overcast day we will generate a good portion of our electrical needs, and on a sunny day about half of our needs.”
McMonigle said the 16 rooftop panels – each 2-by-4 feet – were made in Bellingham. They are guaranteed for 25 years and last for 50 years. A local company, Brimma Solar, installed the panels last week.
McMonigle Veterinary Hospital, at 1014 Central Ave N., has been in business for nearly 40 years. McMonigle took over the family operation from his father in 2001.
