Kent to get new hotel near Central Avenue

Kent could be getting a 122-room hotel near Central Avenue North, just south of Bowen Scarff Ford Lincoln.

Bellevue-based West 77 Partners plans to build a four-story WoodSpring Suites extended-stay hotel on the 1.8-acre site at 405 Novak Lane, just west of Central Avenue North and north of the Alderbrook Apartments, according to city documents.

“It will be a welcome addition along this stretch of Central Avenue,” said Ben Wolters, city economic and community development director, in a Oct. 3 report to the City Council. “It’s one of a couple hotels out there nosing around. In the next five years we have the potential to have at least three new hotels.”

West 77 Partners submitted an application for a pre-application meeting on Sept. 27. City staff will meet with the applicant on Oct. 26, to discuss the proposal and advise the applicant of code requirements.

Each of the two parcels on the property is currently developed with a single-family residence and detached garage constructed in 1946. Documents submitted by the developer for pre-application review include a site/ grading/drainage/utility plan, vehicle maneuvering plan, floor plans and building elevation perspectives.

“Their interest is seeing the economic growth in the region, South King County and particularly Kent, and its proximity to Highway 167 provides ease of access and convenience,” Wolters said. “Extended stay tends to be more business related so you will have customers, suppliers, construction workers who need a place to live to work on a project or job from multiple days to a series of months. These hotels are geared to providing that accommodation usually close to a business center such as our Kent industrial valley.”

Kansas-based WoodSpring Hotels plans to break ground in mid-year 2018 on new buildings in Kent and the Tri-Cities, according to Puget Sound real estate website theregistryps.com. WoodSpring plans to break ground this year on a hotel in Lakewood, near Tacoma. Its only Washington locations so far are in Redmond and Everett.

The company has more than 22o hotels in 33 states. Each suite features a kitchen, including a full-size refrigerator with freezer, a two-burner stove top and a microwave, according to the hotel’s website.
