Seventeen Kent companies were among the 77 businesses that earned environmental awards from King County’s Industrial Waste Program for meeting or exceeding wastewater discharge permit requirements in 2011.

The county announced the award winners April 26.

Since 1995, the King County Industrial Waste Program annually recognizes local companies whose wastewater pretreatment efforts, permit compliance and excellent record-keeping contribute to keeping the region’s water clean, according to a county media release.

To receive an EnvirOvation Award, companies must voluntarily implement innovative pollution prevention and water conservation strategies, reduce waste, significantly upgrade pretreatment methods or equipment, or demonstrate leadership in helping other companies develop better environmental practices.

Four companies earned Commitment-to-Compliance Awards for meeting their respective discharge permit standards every month for five consecutive years with no violations of any kind: Alaskan Copper Works – 6th Ave. of Seattle; Boeing Commercial Airplane – North Field of Seattle; Seattle Solid Waste – Kent Highlands Landfill of Kent; and Tri-Way Industries Inc. of Auburn.

The Industrial Waste Program presented a Gold Award to 60 companies for discharging wastewater with no violations in 2011 and 18 companies earned a Silver Award for having no King County monitoring discharge violations in 2011.

Since 1969, the Industrial Waste Program has required many companies to pretreat wastewater before discharging it into the sewer to protect the county’s treatment facilities and its workers as well as the environment and public health.
