Every year, children and families struggle to replace the missing meals provided by schools through free and reduced lunch programs.
To mark the last day of school, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is teaming up with local retailers to give back to Food Lifeline and help combat hunger in our communities.
Now until July 30, when customers purchase a Greenlite LED at participating Ace Hardware, True Value Hardware, and McLendon Hardware stores, Greenlite will donate 10 cents to Food Lifeline from every LED sold.
In addition, customers will have the opportunity to share with Food Lifeline all or part of a double PSE rebate being offered on clothes washers, electric dryers, refrigerators, freezers, and heat pump dryers purchased at participating King & Bunny’s Appliances, DeWaard & Bode The Appliance Giants, and Judd & Black Appliance stores. PSE will match each dollar donated from rebates up to $5,000. The goal is to raise $30,000 for Food Lifeline during the course of the campaign.
“We’re excited to receive this support from PSE customers this summer,” said Linda Nageotte, president and CEO of Food Lifeline. “For every dollar donated, Food Lifeline can create the equivalent of four meals for children in need.”
More than 40 percent of children in Washington state – more than a half-million children – are enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program. In the summer, these children’s families struggle to make up for the missing meals from the school year. Last year alone, Food Lifeline created 50,000 summer meals. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to meet all of the need in our communities. Through this effort, PSE customers can help reach the goal of bringing 120,000 meals to children and families.
“Giving back to the community and investing in the future with energy efficiency has always been important to PSE,” said Roger Garratt, PSE director of strategic initiatives and Food Lifeline board member. “Helping feed families and children across our service area is one of the best ways we can do that.”
