Goodwill has confirmed its new Outlet Store in Kent will open Jan. 17.

The store, 315 Washington Ave. S., will have an 8:45 a.m. grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony and opening weekend specials.

The Outlet Store is a bargain and treasure hunter’s dream come true, according to Goodwill. Clothing, housewares, glassware, books, media and toys are sold by the pound, unless specifically marked. Merchandise is not pre-sorted.

Customers sort through a variety of items in large blue bins. Most merchandise bins rotate approximately every two hours, replaced with completely different selection merchandise.

An outlet store carries items that were not sold at Goodwill retail stores, so prices are even lower.

The store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Call the store for more information at 253-854-2211.

The Kent Outlet Store will accept donations of gently used clothing, household items and furniture.

Goodwill is a non-profit business that turns donated goods and business revenue into programs that help people with disabilities and disadvantages to employment get jobs.

The store manager, Brent Duncan, has more than 30 years of retail experience, including more than 20 years of retail management with Fred Meyer. Partnering with WorkSource in Auburn, Goodwill hired 25 people in the area to work at the store and in its production space.

Renovated by Mountain Construction and Goodwill’s Go2 Property Services, the Outlet Store is 12,000 square feet of retail space with an additional 17,000 square feet of production space that will help service five South King County stores in Des Moines, Kent, Auburn, Maple Valley and Federal Way.

The store is at the site of the former H.D. Hotspurs restaurant next to Kmart. The former state liquor store, Furniture Plus and Lil’s Thrift Shop all closed by the end of May to make room for Goodwill.
