Macrina Bakery is celebrating the grand opening of its new cafe in Kent by giving away free coffee and espresso beverages on Monday, Aug. 8.
The company’s fourth cafe is attached to Macrina’s new wholesale bakery, 19215 66th Ave. S., in north Kent. The bright, airy cafe is open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday through Friday, including a grand opening at 8:30 a.m. on Monday.
Offerings include Macrina’s artisanal breads, cornetti (Italian-style croissants), pastries, cakes, tarts, sandwiches, soups and other savory items.
The company decided to move to Kent from Seattle because it needed a larger space and found better lease rates. The bakery supplies numerous restaurants, markets and hotels from Edmonds to Tacoma to Port Townsend.
Macrina employs about 150 and features about 40,000 square feet of space for the bakery, storage, cafe and offices. The old location had about 20,000 square feet.
Leslie Mackie opened Macrina in 1993 in Seattle to showcase her love of artisanal bread. Shortly after opening, delicate and delicious pastries were added.
Mackie has received several nominations for the “Outstanding Pastry Chef Award” from the James Beard Foundation and is the author of two popular cookbooks. Macrina has been featured in Sunset and Pacific magazines, Bon Appétit, The LA Times and The New York Times.
