Tahoma National Cemetery was the scene May 26 of one of the largest Memorial Day observances in Western Washington. Military veterans, Gov. Christine Gregoire and other speakers, as well as relatives of deceasced military personnel, gathered in honor of those who served.

Kent Station gets a new store: Marie Haggin Accessories

Debbie Haggin, owner of Marie Haggin Accessories, has scheduled a grand opening in June for her new Kent Station store. Marie Haggin Accessories will have an open house from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The store will offer refreshments, free gifts, raffle prizes and a new array of merchandise that includes handmade jewelry, scarves, handbags, home décor, homemade soaps, gift items, accessories and more.

Kent firefighters assist in four-alarm SeaTac call

The Kent Fire Department assisted the Seatac Fire Department Saturday during a four-alarm fire at the Old Angle Lake School at 19215 28th Ave. S. in SeaTac. Ladder 74 and Engine 73 provide direct support to the overall operation. Ladder 74 provided aerial support to pour thousands of gallons of water from above while Engine 73 provided water to the ladder.

James Goodgion, son of Jim and Candy Goodgion of Kent, was the recipient of a student award at the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo. Goodgion, a Kentlake High School graduate, received the honor during the college’s 2008 Student Awards Convocation April 24. The college gives out the awards based on students’ outstanding accomplishments in academics, work and character.

The subject of shelter animal care is an emotional issue, and one that until just recently divided us in county government. Strong feelings expressed from people in our community and the great number of emails and calls demonstrate how much we all care about the animals in our shelters. It is emotional because those of us with pets often consider them part of the family. It is especially painful to know that we aren’t giving the best care possible to the living, vulnerable and innocent creatures that are in our shelters because they were lost, unwanted or have been abused.
