Emotional moment: Law officers operated as pallbearers Tuesday for the casket of Lakewood officer Greg Richards

Lakewood service for slain officers was emotional time for Kent and law enforcement community

An achingly cold sunny afternoon Tuesday was the stage for an emotional tribute to four slain police officers. Attended by nearly 20,000 - most of them law officers from across the country and Canada - the memorial service took place at the Tacoma Dome, which was filled nearly to capacity.

Editor’s note: Lives of four Lakewood officers touched many; how you can help

By now the news has been out several days: four police officers sitting quietly in a Lakewood coffee shop, gunned down in cold blood. Officers Greg Richards, 42, Tina Griswold, 40, Ronald Owen, 37, and Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39, died Sunday morning in an utterly senseless way, for reasons a sane person may never understand.

Editor’s Note: Thanksgiving is for families

Well, the holidays are nearly upon us. I don’t know about you, but back when I was a kid, it was less about giblets and more about family ties.

You can’t fake a sense of direction – beware of this lost newspaper editor

It’s my personal conviction that some people are born with a sense of direction. Put them anywhere - a forest or some baffling street corner - and these people manage to find their way home. They’ll even remember where they were, so they can come back for a visit some time. I am not cut of that cloth.

Way of the sword: Kendo tournament comes to Kent

They came in their keiko-gi (tunics), hakama (pants) and their bogu (armor.) They swung their shinai (swords) with fervor, shouting with great kiai (spirit). So passed Nov. 17 at the Kent Commons, the epicenter of the annual Kent Kendo Club Tournament.

Hanson Dam ushered in new era for Green River Valley

Before the Howard Hanson Dam, the rainy winters of the Green River Valley brought with them a sense of dread. The Green River, which created the fertile valley, frequently would become a flooding nemesis, turning the communities on its banks into unwelcome versions of Venice.

Thank you, readers, for an amazing election season

A tumultuous election season is nearly over. Not unlike the circus coming to town and leaving a trail of confetti to clean up, the only thing left to tie up now are the straggling ballots bearing Nov. 4 postmarks.
