Stultz sees stellar career at University of Vermont: honorable mention for Udall Scholarship

University of Vermont sophomore Joanie Stultz of Kent has been awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2010 Morris K. Udall Scholarship competition. This national award recognizes sophomores and juniors who are pursuing careers focused on environmental or Native American issues, and she is among 80 scholars and 50 honorable mentions to be acknowledged.

Tukwila offers Backyard Wildlife Festival May 8

The Kent Reporter asked, and readers responded. The King County Sheriff's Office issued a media release May 14 to remind everyone that water safety at area rivers and lakes should be of paramount importance this weekend.

Students from four Kent high schools give ASL, vocal performances Friday and Saturday

Students from four Kent high schools will be participating in Kentlake High School's third-annual "ASL Music Project" May 14 and 15. The performances, conveyed in American Sign Language as well as verbally, take place 7-9 p.m. both nights at the Kentlake Performing Arts Center, 21401 S.E. Falcon Way, Kent. The event includes students from Kentlake, as well as Kentridge, Kentwood and Kent-Meridian high schools.

Volunteers wanted for National Trails Day at Clark Lake Park in Kent

Volunteers are wanted by the Kent City officials to help reconstruct a trail entrance into the northwest corner of Clark Lake Park, at the intersection of Southeast 240th Street and 120th Avenue Southeast. The work party will run from 9 a.m. to noon June 5 to help celebrate National Trails Day.

The Army Corps of Engineers had three drills pumping grout and drilling holes 24 hours to finish a grout curtain on the right abutment of the Howard Hanson Dam last September. In the background of the right abutment is the control tower for the dam and the spill way. The grout curtain was an interim repair. Federal funds have now been secured to put the dam in line for a permanent fix.

Sen. Murray: Funds secured for repairs to Howard Hanson Dam

On Thursday, U.S. Senator Patty Murray, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that she has secured $44 million in emergency funding for critical repairs to the Howard Hanson Dam. Murray included the funds, which will go to the Army Corps of Engineers, in the Fiscal Year 2010 Emergency Supplemental Appropriations bill.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Davis tabbed new coach at Kentwood

A familiar face will be taking over the Kentwood High boys basketball program this fall. Kent-Meridian product Brian Davis, 29, was announced on Thursday as the new Kentwood coach. Davis, who graduated from Kent-Meridian in 1998, also has ties to Kentridge, where he assisted under current Charger coach Dave Jamison (2000-2006).

Annual downtown Kent cleanup is June 5

The Kent Downtown Partnership has scheduled its Annual Spring Clean-Up Day for June 5. Starting 8 a.m. at Kherson Park at Second and Gowe, this year’s event will be similar to those in years past - with teams of volunteers working to spruce up the city’s downtown core. All volunteers will be treated to a lunch at noon.

Legislators wantonly spending dollars

I believe I heard/saw the Democratic legislators and Governor Gregoire tell us they had "cut" the budget as much as possible, sparing the "vulnerable" among us, before raising $800,000,000 in new taxes. I also heard from the governor that we are in a fiscal crisis.
