BASEBALL: Kentwood upends Federal Way 3-2, advances to Class 4A championship game

Ben Cox delivered in a pinch, Taylor White came through in the clutch, and Austin Voth served up another dominating performance on the mound for the Kentwood High baseball team Friday afternoon. Add it up and the Conquerors had just enough to overcome Federal Way 3-2 in a Class 4A state semifinal game at Safeco Field.

U.S. Senate passes Howard Hanson Dam repair bill

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced May 27 that the $44 million she secured in emergency funding for critical repairs to the Howard Hanson Dam has passed the full Senate. The funding, which will go to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was included in the Fiscal Year 2010 Emergency Supplemental Appropriations bill that passed 67-28, according to a media release from Murray.

Click It or Ticket: seatbelt emphasis patrols run through June 6 in south King County

Kent Police are participating in the state's Click It or Ticket seat-belt emphasis patrols through June 6. The patrols are done at night because the traffic death rate is four times higher at night than during the day, according to a Washington Traffic Safety Commission media release.

In a matter of seconds, Kent Hagen’s foot and heart were broken during a pick-up basketball game in January. Luckily, the Kentwood High golfer’s swing – and hope – remained very much intact. So much so, in fact, that Hagen will be doing more than just competing in this week's Class 4A state tournament at Kennewick’s Canyon Lakes Golf Course just five months after breaking his foot.

TRACK: Kent-Meridian boys win surprise-filled district meet

Surprises? The Class 4A West Central District track and field meet last Friday and Saturday was filled with more than its share of eye-openers. The Kent-Meridian boys continued their ascension, finishing in a tie with Federal Way for first place in then team race. K-M and Federal Way tallied 66 points apiece, well ahead of third-place Gig Harbor (47.5).

Washington Legislators wantonly spending dollars

I believe I heard/saw the Democratic legislators and Governor Gregoire tell us they had "cut" the budget as much as possible, sparing the "vulnerable" among us, before raising $800,000,000 in new taxes. I also heard from the governor that we are in a fiscal crisis.

Kent School District needs to rethink its priorities

I would like to respond to the column by Kim Halley ("Spotlight on Inclusion" May 7). I, too, attended this event on April 22. In fact, as a general education teacher, I was involved in a focus group for this project.

FOOTBALL: Brett Allen named new coach at Kent-Meridian

After several months of searching, Kent-Meridian High finally landed a new head football coach on Monday night. Brett Allen, who coached wide receivers and linebackers at Kent-Meridian from 2001-2004 and who is an English teacher at Mill Creek Middle School, was officially announced as the new coach on Monday after several weeks of speculation.
