Gray skies couldn't dampen the spirit of participants at the Kent Fourth of July Splash. The city's big ode to Independence Day had the hallmarks of an old-fashioned festival, with pie- and watermelon-eating contests, live music, and of course fireworks.

SeaTac man nearly killed by homemade fireworks

A 64-year-old SeaTac man was injured when homemade fireworks exploded last night (July 4), sending him to Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries. The Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit and Bomb Disposal Unit are investigating.

A Kent fire investigator as of Sunday afternoon was looking into the cause of a house fire that took place this morning, July 4, in the 13500 block of S.E. 233 Street. The fire, which was first reported at 11:20 a.m., has displaced three people.

‘Cruzin’ tennis event was a smash

Head tennis pro Allan Overland, the staff at Boeing Employee Tennis Club and Kent 4 Health hosted a free event June 24 for Kent 4 Health’s ‘Cruzin’ Passport’ participants. Kids were given tennis tips from instructors and played fun drills to build beginning tennis skills. Some parents got into the action too!

Reading another article about the murder of another darling child is heartbreaking. Seeing that the murderer, Joel Zellmer, only got 50 years, is maddening. This progressive state, with its touchy-feelie good laws has no sense at all.

I often glance through the obituary section of the Sunday paper. I enjoy the old photos… the little pieces of written history that follow. The most revealing part of a death notice is the last paragraph, the suggested recipients of donations in lieu of flowers.

Power outage strikes 1,900 Kent customers

An estimated 1,900 customers of Puget Sound Energy lost power for a couple of hours the morning of July 2 on Kent's East Hill near Lake Meridian. Tree branches hit power lines along Canyon Drive and caused the loss of power at about 8:15 a.m. July 2, said a PSE spokeswoman.

You don't have to go far from home to celebrate America's birthday. The 12th annual community celebration at Lake Meridian Park, 14800 S.E. 272nd St., features a variety of fun and free activities from noon to 11 p.m. July 4, including a large fireworks display over the lake at 10 p.m.

LITTLE LEAGUE: Senior All-Star team nabs District 10 title for the second year in a row

They were down, but far from out. The Kent Little League Senior All-Stars got off on the wrong foot Wednesday afternoon, losing to Soundview/Steel Lake 16-1 in a third-round game of the District 10 tournament at Auburn's Brannan Park.
