Kent Police arrested a 21-year-old Auburn man for investigation of first-degree robbery in connection with the theft of a large sword and a carjacking Tuesday on the West Hill.

Starting today, drivers along northbound Interstate 5 to Seattle have have a series of new Smarter Highway signs to follow, in an effort by the state Department of Transportation to reduce traffic congestion and crashes, as well as to keep traffic moving.

Kent Police shoot, injure driver after car chase

A Kent Police officer shot and injured a 19-year-old Kent man after a car chase Aug. 6 on the East Hill. The officer began to chase a vehicle at about 6:35 p.m., according to a media release from the Auburn Police. Auburn detectives are investigating the case to avoid a conflict of interest because the incident involved a Kent Police officer.

Off-leash dog park for Kent receives major donation from PETCO; could open by October

The Kent Parks Foundation has received a $10,000 grant from the PETCO Foundation to help develop an off-leash dog park on Kent's East Hill. The Foundation will present a check to Mayor Suzette Cooke at the City Council's Aug. 17 meeting. The meeting starts 7 p.m. at Kent City Hall, 220 Fourth Ave. S.

The Backstreet Boys rocked out the ShoWare Center Aug. 5, playing to an audience of mainly screaming girls of all ages. Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and AJ McLean belted out the standards that turned them into rock stars during the '90s: "I Want It That Way," "Quit Playing Games with My Heart," and "All I Have To Give," among others.

Kent Chamber of Commerce 33rd District candidate forum is Aug. 10

The Kent Chamber of Commerce is having its second of two candidate forums for the upcoming primary elections. Organized by the chamber's Government Affairs Committee, the next forum runs noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 10, and will cover the races of the 33rd and 47th districts. Both will take place at the Kent Centennial Building's North/South Conference Room, 400 W. Gowe St.

King County voters turning in their ballots at higher-than-hoped-for rate

King County voters are returning ballots at a greater rate than projected for the first week of the Primary Election. More than 100,000 ballots have already been returned, as of Aug. 6, and Elections officials are busy processing them. As in all elections, there are some ballots that can’t be opened because of problems associated with voter signatures.

This remarkable facility, completed in 2009, was jointly envisioned and funded by the Seattle Thunderbird Hockey Team and the city of Kent. Sheriff’s Office looking for second Covington rape suspect

King County Sheriff's Office detectives are looking for a man in his mid-20s suspected in the rape of a 21 year-old woman on July 28 in Covington. The attack occurred just after midnight July 28 near the LA Fitness, 27245 172nd Ave. S.E., according to an Aug. 4 Sheriff's Office media release.
