The Kent Little League Senior All-Star team bounced back from a tough loss to win the District 10 title to end June. In July, that same bunch bashed its way to the state championship. The local Stars, which is comprised of 14-16 year olds, hit a wall from Aug. 3-10 in Ontario, Calif., where they played in the Western Regional tournament, which brought together the top 10 teams from the region.

In a little less than a year since, it has blossomed into a passion to become fit, eat better and reach goals that once seemed impossible for Kent’s Sheryl Sprague. “Originally, I started out doing a 5k walk,” said Sprague, who has lost more than 100 pounds during the last year and now weighs in at 350 pounds. “Each one I did told me that I could do more than I originally thought I could do. Sometimes, you’re scared and think, ‘Oh gosh, what if I can’t do this?’ Then you do it, and you’re amazed and wonder, ‘What can I do next?’“

Secretary of State Reed to voters: Don’t forget to take part in Primary

With the Aug. 17 primary election just one day away, Secretary of State Sam Reed is reminding Washington voters to take part in the primary by filling out and returning their ballots. “This year’s primary features many important races, including a U.S. Senate seat, congressional, legislative and judicial races, plus many county and local contests,” said Reed, the state’s chief elections officer. “If you want your voice heard, fill out your ballot and turn it in by Election Night.”

Kent Police, other law enforcement, beef up DUI patrols through Sept. 6

Kent Police and other law enforcement agencies across the state will crackdown on drunk drivers with extra patrols from Aug. 12 to Sept. 6. The Drive Hammered, Get Nailed campaign will rank as the largest DUI enforcement campaign with 178 agencies participating throughout the state, according to a Washington Traffic Safety Commission media release.

Kent’s West Hill Skate Park gets something new – check it out

The three bowls at Kent’s West Hill Skate Park will get another new look this month. The temporary mural painted on the bowls last summer by a young, local Kent artist and volunteers did what it was intended to do as it curbed graffiti. The park is at Reith Road and 42nd Avenue South.

ShoWare Shootout lives up to expectations

The rain came. But that hardly put any sort of damper on the first-ever ShoWare Shootout 3-on-3 basketball tournament, which played out Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 7-8, amidst grey skies and sporadic rain showers. The 160-team, 16-division tournament that took place in the parking lot of the ShoWare Center brought players from as far away as Yakima and Spokane, Everett and Marysville.

Motorcyclists taunt injured State Patrol trooper after he crashes chasing them

A 46-yeaer-old Washington State Patrol trooper suffered a mild concussion, cuts to the head and neck and bruises after he lost control of his car while chasing a group of motorcycles traveling more than 100 mph at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Seattle along northbound Interstate 5 near State Route 599, just north I-405 and Kent.
