She's taking her basketball — and signature headband — and heading east. Kylie Huerta, Kentwood's diminutive point guard who is known as much for draining clutch jumpers as she is for wearing a variety of different colored headbands during the course of the season, verbally committed last week to play next year at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

Kent Police are hopeful that the public will recognize a man captured on video as he robbed a local 7-11 convenience store. The man used a black handgun to threaten the clerk while committing the robbery.

The amnesty period is running out to get your dog or cat licensed through King County. As of Oct. 1

Kent pet owners take note: Amnesty period expires soon to license your animals

Residents in unincorporated King County and 27 contracting cities, including Kent, have a little more than a week left to take advantage of an amnesty period for unlicensed pets before they face a no-tolerance fine. As part of the new Regional Animal Services model for animal control in King County, residents were given a 90-day amnesty period to license their pets without facing a fine. The amnesty period expires at the end of the day Sept. 30 Starting Oct. 1, residents who have unlicensed cats or dogs face a fine of $125 for spayed or neutered pets, and up to $250 for an unaltered pet.

Kent to participate in Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Do you have old prescription drugs or over-the-counter medicines that are no longer of use or past the expiration date? If so, the Kent Police can dispose of it for you in their Prescription Drug Take Back Day Sept. 25.

Female inmate dies at King County jail in Kent

A 42-year-old female inmate died Monday morning at the King County jail at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent. The woman was found at 9:05 a.m. Monday by jail staff during a routine security check, according to a media release from the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention.

Change in law will help small-business people find health coverage

An upcoming change in Washington state law will soon make it easier for self-employed people to get health insurance coverage. The change involves small-group coverage, which under state law in recent years has been defined as businesses of 2 to 50 employees. Small-group coverage generally does not require applicants to first pass a health screening.

Soroptimist of Kent to have coat drive Oct.

Start cleaning out those closets of gently used coats and warm winter clothing. The Soroptimist of Kent is holding its fourth-annual Coat and Warm Clothing Drive. The service organization is working in conjunction with the Kent School District, the Kent Fire and Police departments and the City of Kent to collect these items for distribution to the homeless children in the Kent School District.

County Council to host hearings on 2011 King County Budget in Seattle, Bellevue, Snoqualmie and Kent

In preparation for a 2011 King County Budget that will include $60 million in cuts, the chair of the Metropolitan King County Council’s Budget Leadership team is encouraging the public to get involved by going to the Budget Committee’s four public hearings.

FOOTBALL: Kentwood throttles Tahoma, 49-3

This was supposed to be the first big challenge of the season for the Kentwood High football team. Instead, Friday night’s showdown against Tahoma at Bill Maxwell Stadium proved to be more of the same as the Conquerors blasted the Bears 49-3 in a South Puget Sound League North Division game. Five different Kentwood players reached the end zone – led by a pair of touchdown runs by Mikell Everette and Lonzell Young – as the Conquerors rolled up 442 total yards of offense and punted just twice.

James Kerr’s letter, "Let’s not abandon deep-sea drilling," appearing in your Sept. 3 issue, suggests exactly the response to the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster we don’t need and must not accept.

Punishment should fit crime

The proposed penalty for Mr. Gregory Aurdell Ross is hard to believe. Four years and six months for the needless deaths of Ms. Cormier and Ms. Stenseth is a crime in itself.
