Most of us who live in this community are well aware of the crisis in education that many are now talking about. The Kent School District has been faced with cutbacks and many schools are struggling. What you may not know is that one organization highlighted in these conversations is quietly at work here in our community - Communities In Schools of Kent.

VOLLEYBALL: West Central District tournament at Kentwood High Friday, Saturday

Kentwood junior Kacie Seims sets the ball to a teammate during a South Puget Sound League tournament match against Curtis on Saturday, Oct. 30 at Todd Beamer High in Federal Way. The Conquerors lost to the Vikings in four games (25-13, 25-22, 26-28, 25-19) and will take the No. 4 seed to the Class 4A West Central District tournament, which is slated for Nov. 6 at Kentwood High. Overall, it was a rough day for local teams at the league tournament. Kent-Meridian lost to Puyallup (22-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-23) and will take the No. 8 seed to the district tournament while Kentridge fell to Rogers (25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 25-17) and will take the No. 10 seed. The top eight teams from the 16-team district tournament field advance to state, which is next weekend at Kennewick’s Toyota Center.

CROSS COUNTRY: Kentwood, Kentridge boys bolt to state berths

One broke through. Another broke down only to get back up and deliver one of the season’s most courageous performances. Despite the heavy rain, there were plenty of local highlights from which to choose during the Class 4A Westside Classic cross country race at Fort Steilacoom Park on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Kent Police detectives continued to follow up on a number of promising leads Monday while attempting to identify the person responsible for an early morning shooting Sunday that killed Devin Topps, a former Kentridge High School student-athlete. Topps, 18, was shot and killed outside a house party in northeast Kent.

King County expects to hit New Election Day record with mail-in ballots

Ballots are being returned at a steady rate to King County Elections where Election Day results are expected to set a new mail ballot record. Local man shot to death outside house party in Kent

Kent Police are investigating the early morning shooting death of a local man that took place outside a house party in north Kent Sunday.  Police were sent to the 20000 block of 92nd Avenue South at 2:05 a.m. for a report of gunfire in the area. Once on location, police found the victim lying in the street next to his truck, mortally wounded.

Kent Schools Superintendent Vargas to speak on state of the school district Nov. 3

Kent Schools Superintendent Edward Lee Vargas will be the guest speaker at the Kent Chamber of Commerce's November membership luncheon Nov. 3. The event runs 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Vargas will speak on the state of the Kent School District for his presentation.

FOOTBALL: ‘No final decision’ made yet in case of Kentwood quarterback Shane Green

No resolution was reached during the appeal hearing Friday, Oct. 29 for Kentwood High quarterback Shane Green. Green, a senior, was suspended for last week's game against Auburn Riverside along with Thursday night's 34-10 win over Kentridge for violating the Kent School District's athletic code. The district was expected to complete its investigation into the incident Friday afternoon.

FOOTBALL: Kentwood concludes perfect regular season with 34-10 win over Kentridge

Off-the-field distractions did little to slow down the Kentwood High football team Thursday night at French Field. If anything, the recent suspension of starting quarterback Shane Green for an alleged violation of the district’s athletic code very well may have galvanized the fifth-ranked Conquerors.
