Kent to open severe weather shelter

The city of Kent is opening its severe weather shelter for the homeless the nights of Dec. 30 through Jan. 2 at Kent Lutheran Church due to predicted dangerously low temperatures.

Kent plans new sidewalks along West James Street

Pedestrians will have improved access along West James Street after the Kent City Council approved a $196,000 contract to Road Construction Northwest, Inc., to construct new sidewalks and pedestrian signals.

Kent public housing project to get $3.5 million renovation

Work has started on $3.5 million in improvements to the apartments and community center at Cascade Homes, a 108-unit public housing complex with 327 residents in the Panther Lake area on Kent's East Hill.

Toys for Joy brings Kent together

With record layoffs, home foreclosures, and many families turning to public assistance, 2010 has been tough for many in our community. But true to form, the Kent Fire Department comes to the rescue once again. The Kent FD has for many years now organized the Toys for Joy program that collects, wraps, and gives out toys to disadvantaged children in the Kent community.

Kent sellout crowd sees Spokane shut out Thunderbirds at ShoWare Center

A sellout crowd of 6,125 packed the ShoWare Center Tuesday night in Kent for the Seattle Thunderbirds hockey game. But despite the full house, the Spokane Chiefs beat Seattle 2-0 in the Western Hockey League contest.

Men escape serious injury in Kent after car flies 40 feet and strikes tree

Three men escaped serious injury after their car left a Kent street, flew 40 feet through the air and struck a tree 9 feet above the ground. Seat belts and airbags saved the lives of the driver and two passengers in the after 3 a.m. Dec. 24 crash in the 26600 block of Woodland Way South on the East Hill, according to a Kent Police media release.

Thielman was one of just five gymnasts from the Kent School District to qualify for the Class 4A state meet last season. T-Birds shoot down Winterhawks Dec. 18 in ‘total team effort’

It was a total team effort Dec. 18 at the ShoWare Center for the Seattle Thunderbirds. Goalie Calvin Pickard stopped 50 of 52 shots and three players had multi-point games to help the T-Birds defeat the Portland Winterhawks 4-2.

T-Birds vanquish Spokane in overtime Dec. 15

Seattle Thunderbirds right wing Burke Gallimore had a hat trick Dec. 15 at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena to help lead the T-Birds to a 5-4 overtime victory over the Spokane Chiefs. Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard returned from the Canadian National Junior Team Selection Camp in Toronto on Wednesday afternoon. Pickard made 40 saves on 44 shots and improved his record to 14-9-2-4.
