The Thunderbirds' Friday, Jan. 14 hockey matchup against the Everett Silvertips will be broadcast regionally on FSN. It is the first of 10 U.S. Division games that will be broadcast by FSN this season.

Courtney Johnson scored a team-high 20 points and Kylie Huerta added 19, yet it was the season-high 14 from Megan Wynne that ultimately paved the way to Kentwood’s 55-50 win over the Ravens in a South Puget Sound League North Division game. Wynne, who entered the starting rotation three games ago, drilled three 3-pointers and proved to be the outside threat the Conquerors lost when Sanda Milovic graduated last spring. “Megan was the ‘X’ factor,” said Kentwood coach Dean Montzingo. “She kind of stepped up as another scorer.”

There was a new beacon in the Kent night skies Jan. 7, as the Seattle-Thunderbirds vanquished Kelowna in Western Hockey League action at the ShoWare Center. The center's brand-new video marquee was a veritable light show to drivers passing the center on West James Street, with pictures of the T-Birds in action as well as other events coming up for the center.

WRESTLING: Kent schools medal 22 at All-SPSL Championships

After years of discussion, the All-South Puget Sound League Championships wrestling tournament reached fruition Dec. 30 at Auburn High. And, as anticipated, the competition and talent level on the mat were as high as ever. Behind a pair of individual championships and 10 total placers, Enumclaw snuck away with the team title, pulling in a total of 198.5 points. The Hornets were followed by second-place Auburn (187.5), Graham-Kapowsin (184) and Tahoma (167).

Gang activity is on the rise. Less than two weeks ago outside Southcenter Mall, a gang confrontation resulted in gunfire and a multi-agency police response. A day later, a few miles down the road in Maple Valley, a 19-year-old man and 16-year-old girl were injured in a gang-related shooting on the Lake Wilderness Trail.
