King County monitoring Green River flows; minor flooding expected upstream of Auburn

King County officials continue to monitor the Green River Friday for flooding because of rainfall and releases of water from behind the Howard Hanson Dam. But only minor flooding is expected in the lower Mill Creek basin, and in rural areas of the Green River Valley without levees upstream of Auburn, according to King County.

Whatever you believe about the Jan. 8 shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, it is clear that now is the time to reflect on the nature of political discourse in this country. The very foundation of a democracy is the free and peaceful interchange of ideas. Recent political discourse has crossed the line with references to violence and suggestions that “Second Amendment remedies” may be somehow justified if victory cannot be had at the ballot box.

Citizens help Kent Police arrest woman, 53, for bank robbery

Kent Police arrested a 53-year-old Des Moines woman following the robbery of an East Kent credit union Jan. 11. No one was hurt in the robbery and police were able to recover a quantity of evidence and money. Officers were sent to the Alaska USA Credit Union shortly after 4 p.m. The bank branch is located inside a Fred Meyer store at 10201 S.E. 240th Street. Reports indicated that a woman entered the bank and demanded money before fleeing.
